While IT was already famously portrayed by Tim Curry in the 90s, that was on television. TV's got rules and stuff to keep people from having fun, and in 2017 the novel was reinterpreted with a hard R rating. Also, they shifted the date around because any excuse to showcase kids running around in (blog post) the 80s.
